WHO WE ARE

The Greater San Antonio used to be a part of the Neighborhood Services Department in the City of Oakland. As the budget crisis led to the city to disolve the department, a group of neighbors in the area are taking it upon ourselves to preserve the hard work and community building that those in beats 19x and 18x/y have done over the last decade. Our work includes pushing the city to address top issues in the area: human trafficking, illegal dumping, the homelessness crisis, violent crime, traffic safety, and more.   Working together to elevate our voices, we are creating the change we want to see in our streets, one step at a time.

WHAT WE DO

Many voices.
One Loud Community.

We meet every other month to discuss the needs of our community. Through these gatherings, the Neighborhood Council Chair and Co-chair meet with city officials to advocate for change.

Along with these meetings, groups in the city have created their own actions to build community, improve our streets, and push the city for change. These actions have included both small and large campaigns, such as monthly gatherings to pick up trash, email chains to city officials, an annual Halloween event, community build traffic calming devices, and creating the San Antonio Neighborhood Coalition to address human trafficking surrounding International Blvd.

ABOUT US

The Greater San Antonio Neighborhood Council includes residents from the beats 19x, 18x, and 18y: From Lake Merritt, down International Blvd to the 23rd and the Embarcadero, and above San Antonio Park to 580.

We gather bi-monthly over Zoom and occasionally in-person to discuss the needs of our neighborhoods and work with the Deputy City Administrator and other city officials to affect change.

In February 2025, the city of Oakland dissolved the Neighborhood Services Department, which organized and provided support to the Neighborhood Councils across the city. It is up to communities to carry on these organizations and continue to meet with the city to promote our needs, voice our concerns, and build safer, stronger neighborhoods.
